Barrel Memorial Update
The Barrel Memorial Tournament has been confirmed for Sunday 21st August and will be held at the Carlton Park venue we used last year.
Summer 2022 Leagues Update
All the teams in the Summer 2022 league have been updated to show Captain and Vice Captain, Home venue map, Fixture List and any relevant notes about the team/venue.
To view your team, visit the league tables by clicking here and click on your team name.
Captains and Vice Captains will receive an email early this week with the Captains Handbook and revised rulebook. This will have all the details needed to start arranging matches, including all the contact details for the teams.
The 2022 Cup Competition will be online later in the week.
When two become three
Rather than the usual separate Pairs competition that is run through the summer, this year we are looking at having a Triples competition instead.
The reasoning is that we play pairs in the Summer league, and in the wider Petanque world most competitions are triples based. As those that have played in the Winter League may have discovered, triples can be a different game tactically, so we hope this will expose more people to the format.
Teams can be made up of 3 to 5 players to allow flexibility in playing matches, with matches to be arranged by mutual agreement, although the expectation would be weekday evenings through the spring and summer. The overall league structure will be decided based on number of entries, but each match will be 2 games to 13 points, with 3 points awarded for win and 1 for a draw (with a bonus point for team with the highest aggregate score in the case of a draw).
To enter a team, please email [email protected] with your team players and home piste.
Team Rep Meeting
The 2022 Team Representative Meeting was held at the Riverside Centre on Friday 4th March.
Starting the meeting was the two votes on League size and 2022 Plate competition.
The League size vote was close, with 24-16 in favour of 4 divisions of 7 and 2 divisions of 6.
The Plate vote was carried easily in favour of having a Plate competition for those who lose in the first round of the Knockout Cup.
We then discussed the various competitions and visits planned for 2022, and your Team Representative was provided with some information on these, and the events will be posted on the events page on the website.
Proposed Leagues 2022 Summer
With 40 teams having entered the 2022 league, and with the season starting slightly later than usual, we are proposing 2 options for the leagues this year, and we will be holding a vote on this at the Team Representatives Meeting.
Option 1 - 5 leagues of 8 teams per league, giving 14 games to be played.
Option 2 - 4 leagues of 7 teams (Premier, Division’s 1, 2 and 3) and 2 divisions of 6 teams (Division 4 and 5). This gives the top 4 divisions 12 games and the lower 2 divisions 10 games.
We will also be asking the Team Representatives to vote on whether we have a Plate competition for those teams who get knocked out of the cup in the first round.
Please make sure you let your Team Representative know your preferences so they can represent your team at the meeting.

Ladies League 2022
Ladies League is back
Following on from the inaugural 2019 season, Deborah Bell has again agreed to run the Ladies League in 2022. The league format will be decided when all entries are in, but ideally we will have leagues followed by a seeded knockout stage, culminating in a meal after the finals.
To enter please complete the registration form by clicking here. Entry is £10 per team.
Please encourage all the ladies in your teams to take part in this, the feedback from the pairs who took part in 2019 was really positive.
Bid to become a region
For several years there has been a growing understanding within the Suffolk Coastal Petanque Alliance that the next logical step is to become an official Petanque England Region.
For those who are not familiar, Petanque England are the governing body for Petanque in England. The country is divided into Regions and when you apply for a licence you do so for a specific Region. You can also specify to be a member of an official Club or as an independent member. More info on the benefits of holding a licence can be found here.
The first thing we wish to make clear is that should we be granted Regional status, there would be no requirement for any existing SCPA members to obtain a licence, neither would any teams have to become official Petanque England clubs. All existing leagues and competitions, Summer League, Winter League, Pairs, Moules & Boules etc, will continue to be run as usual and will not require a licence to enter.
There would be some new competitions such as Regional Qualifiers, Regional Triples/Pairs/Singles/Tir de Precision, which will require you to have a licence to participate in, as well as some larger tournaments run around the country that you would be eligible to enter in.
For many, the highlight of the year is the Inter-Regional Competition, held in early September. Here is a comment from our own John Willis who took part in 2021:-
If anyone is wondering about the proposal to the change in our regional status, I can only put my own point of view.
It will mostly affect the way Suffolk is represented in the regional finals and my experience of the tournament was very positive. I only played in the finals for the first time this summer at Melton Mowbray. It was a fantastic gathering of all the regions of the country so giving the opportunity to play a wide range of players, and all played in great spirit.
I would recommend more people to go forward to play in the regional qualifiers and hopefully represent Suffolk in the finals weekend next year.....it was great fun.
